This 6-day package offers entry to the Great Wall Marathon, a delightful stay in rural Jixian near the venue of the marathon and an exciting tour of Beijing, one of the most fascninating cities in the world.

This marathon and holiday package combines a Beijing tour with a stay in rural Jixian located near the Great Wall Marathon venue. This package is a good option if you want to combine the classic Beijing experience with a touch of rural China. With two nights in the village of Jixian, you'll get a taste of village life before heading back to bustling Beijing after the marathon.

Itinerary

Day 1: 15 May 2013 - Welcome to BeijingMeals:

Arrival in Beijing. Great Wall Marathon staff will greet you at the airport and an arrival transfer is included in this package. After checking into your hotel, check the hotel notice board for your tour guide's name and phone number. Information packs will be handed out by the guide. The rest of the day is free for you to explore Beijing.

Day 2: 16 May 2013 - Great Wall Marathon route inspection and Jixian/PingguMeals: B L D

Today we make an early start and head to the Great Wall for route inspection. All runners are expected to walk the 3.5km of the Huangyaguan section of the wall that is part of the marathon course. Non runners are also welcome although good physical condition is required.

A sandwich lunch will be served and after lunch we will check into our hotel in the small town of Jixian, about a 45min drive away from Huangyaguan.

The afternoon is free for you to explore the town and we will meet later in the evening to enjoy local dishes for dinner. Please remember to check out of your hotel before leaving Beijing. Breakfast will be served as a breakfast box if the hotel is unable to serve a buffet breakfast before our early departure.

Day 3: 17 May 2013 - Relaxation in rural China with tour option and pasta dinnerMeals: B D

Today is a good day for relaxing before the big day tomorrow. Take in the local atmosphere of JIxian. Or go on the optional Rural China tour which takes visitors on an excursion to a local outdoor market and a visit to the Qing dynasty tombs. The tour includes lunch. Load up on your carbs at tonight's pasta party.

Day 4: 18 May 2013 - Race DayMeals: B L

Today is the big day! After an early breakfast, we'll leave Jixian at around 5am to head for the Huangyaguan section of the Great Wall where the race will start at 7:30am.

Sandwich lunches will be provided for everyone. Busses will be ready to take runners back to Beijing between 12 and 4:30pm.

A 20min massage on site is included after the race. Please remember to check out of the hotel in the morning as we will leave for Beijing at the end of the day.

Day 5: 19 May 2013 - Explore Beijing - tour options and gala dinnerMeals: B D

Today is a day of recovery. Sleep in, relax or do a bit of shopping in the Silk Alley, or fill your senses with the sights and sounds of Beijing. Two optional tours are available for purchase today. Take in classic Beijing highlights with the City of Emperor tour or visit the giant panda and Summer Palace outside of Beijing with the City of People tour. All participants will be picked up at their hotels and taken to the gala dinner tonight. 

Day 6: 20 May 2013 - Farewell BeijingMeals: B

Depending on your departure time, you might be able to do some last-minute shopping or take in more of Beijing's sights. Hotel check-out is before noon. Please note that the departure transfer is not included in the package but can be pre-booked at an extra cost. See prices for details.

  • One-way transfer between airport and hotel upon arrival on 15 May 2013. Transfers are shared with other runners arriving around the same time so you may need to wait for around half an hour depending on arrival times.
  • 5 nights accommodation
  • Meals as stated in the itinerary. Breakfast is American-style buffet when possible. Meals in Jixian are offered according to the itinerary.

All Great Wall Marathon participants must have appropriate travel insurance. Please make sure you have taken out appropriate coverage before travelling to China. Please consult with your physician regarding immunisation recommendations for China.

Visa requirements:

All travellers are required to have a valid visa for entering the People's Republic of China. Every participant must also have a passport valid past 1 December 2013. Please note that it is your responsibility to be in possession of the necessary travel documents before travelling to China.

Spend the morning shopping for souvenirs at the Jixian outdoor market followed by a visit to the magnificent Qing Tombs. We'll end the morning's excursions with a delicious Chinese lunch.
